SilkWeb also provides educational support services to tribal schools and colleges through the Bureau of Indian Education and State college systems. SilkWeb provides cybersecurity workforce development curriculum and custom training solutions for State, Tribal, and Federal clients.

We are Native owned and operated and have been a leading provider of custom e-learning and professional development training services since 2006. For over 15 years we have created innovative custom e-learning solutions using research-informed design and development techniques. Every custom e-learning solution we design is developed in-house by our instructional design experts and development tea.

Laurel Silk, MAEd

Chief Executive Officer

Laurel has been in the education industry for over 20 years holding roles as instructional designer, faculty member, corporate trainer, and author. She is an engaging and experienced leader able to effectively communicate and foster growth amongst all employees. As CEO of SilkWeb, she is responsible for the overall strategic direction and success of all business development, marketing, and teaming ventures.  Laurel works with degree-granting institutions to assist them in developing custom courseware solutions and programming strategies that drive enrollment and improve academic quality. Laurel has over two decades of experience working in multicultural communities and schools, including Historical Black Colleges and Universities (HCBUs) and Tribal Colleges. Laurel is Lakota and an enrolled member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. She was born in Chicago, Illinois and moved to Arizona in 1979. Laurel graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a Master's degree in Education (2000). Laurel is an expert level Blackboard Learn administrator and course developer. 

Michael Shaw, DM

Chief Operations Officer

Dr. Shaw has over 20 years of leadership experience and has taught and developed hundreds of online courses. During his career he has led companies through complex business problems and organizational change in higher education and academic publishing. Dr. Shaw is adept at applying critical and creative thinking skills to address modern managerial and leadership issues. He has created new business processes and refined existing production cycles to streamline work processes, assure quality, and increase revenue. Dr. Shaw has co-authored six textbooks and has edited several others. He has a demonstrated track record of ethical decision making and social responsibility. His research interests include the economic effects of automation in addition to water scarcity and climate change in the global economy. He is accountable for planning and allocating resources, preparing budgets, monitoring progress, and keeping stakeholders informed throughout the project lifecycle. Dr. Shaw earned a Doctor of Management degree in Organizational Leadership and an MBA from Arizona State University. 

Nicole Bremer Nash, CPACC

Vice President & Compliance Officer

Nicole has over 15 years of experience in the education and non-profit sectors. Nicole is responsible for overseeing internal operations, helping to build strong customer relationships, maximizing the company's operating performance, and helping to achieve the company's financial goals. She is a Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies and an active member of the International Association of Accessibility Professionals. Nicole regularly represents SilkWeb at conferences and provides accessibility workshops for SilkWeb's clients. 

Annelise Skovmand, MA

Director of Instructional Design

Annelise discusses the requirements of each project with the client and coordinates with the instructional design team to plan, design, develop, analyze, implement, and evaluate the scope of the project. She oversees the instructional designing and development that is involved in the project and ensures that the project is prioritized according to the given deadline. Annelise plans and designs strategies and makes effective use of various instructional tools to evaluate instructional design solutions to ensure that quality design standards are met. She provides technical leadership and works with instructional designers to manage the design and development of learning solutions. She develops detailed project plans and ensures that resources are made available within the assigned budget and that the project is completed within the given deadline. Annelise identifies the root causes of any issues related to the project and recommends effective solutions. She provides performance related feedback and offers any coaching that is required for the designers to produce quality content. She stays current with the latest instructional delivery trends and collaborates with cross functional teams to accomplish the clients’ goals. She is fluent in English and Spanish. Annelise earned a Master of Arts degree in Arts Administration from Columbia University – Teacher’s College in New York. She is an expert Blackboard Learn, Canvas, and D2L Brightspace developer.

Caitlyn "Kit" John, MEd

Director of Learning Innovation

Kit collaborates with university professors and subject matter experts to transform traditional and in-person classes to asynchronous, online environments. Kit works closely with the QA team to ensure courses are accessible to all learners. Kit earned her M.S. in Instructional Design, Development, and Evaluation from Syracuse University and her B.S. in Information and Telecommunication Systems from Ohio University. She is an expert Blackboard Learn, Canvas, and D2L Brightspace developer.

Kate Small

Director of Research & Development

Kate is the Director of Research & Development and a Senior Instructional Designer who has been with SilkWeb since 2017. She primarily focuses on integrating instructional technology with sound research-based instructional principles. In the course of 15+ years in instructional design and educational consulting, she has developed expertise in leading teams to analyze, design, develop, and implement learning solutions in a wide range of subject areas for a number of publishers and institutions. Kate uses her extensive background in graphics, usability, and communication to provide comprehensive solutions. She consults at all levels to develop innovative on-ground and distance-learning solutions that meet each client’s educational and technology needs. She is an expert Blackboard Learn, Canvas, and D2L Brightspace developer.

Michaela Werlinger, DMP, PCM

Director of Marketing

Michaela is responsible for the development of branding and corporate identify initiatives for Intertribal Education Foundation and SilkWeb. She actively develops and implements marketing plans, including promotional calendars and programs, new product introductions and training initiatives. Michaela oversees the operation of the website and email marketing programs including developing marketing budgets and product sales forecasts. She designs deliverables for all aspects of faculty training initiatives and promotes SilkWeb using social media, community partnerships, and conference sponsorships. She is responsible for the creative design cycle and dissemination of print and digital training materials through social media platforms. Michaela has instilled trust and confidence with stakeholders, sponsors and partners and cemented herself as a trusted partner. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from Northern Arizona University and earned credentials as a Digital Marketing Professional (DMP) and Professional Certified Marketer (PCM). She is an active member of the American Marketing Association.
