AR/VR & MR or Immersive Learning

Immersive digital tools such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) allows students to understand theoretical concepts quicker and in greater depth. Immersive learning is a technique that uses simulated or artificial environments to keep users engaged and interactive while comprehending concepts.

Virtual Reality allows users to enter a computer-generated world. This experience is usually through visual and audio inputs. When virtual reality is incorporated in an educational setting, the connection between the learner and concept strengthens as they have an interactive experience. Some virtual reality examples can include Google Cardboard and HTC Vive.

Different than VR, augmented reality overlays interactive features (text, images, videos, animations, etc.) into real-world environments. AR is usually experienced through tablets, smartphones, and laptops by the usage of apps. This enhances learning and can give the opportunity for students to create their own content. A good example of augmented reality are the different lenses available through a smartphone’s camera on different applications.

Mixed Reality incorporates a combination of elements from VR and AR as both real- world and digital objects interact. MR technology is fairly new, however, becoming increasingly popular. Educators can use MR to expose students to experiences that are not always possible in a traditional classroom setting. zSpace mixed reality is a great example as it is a tool that encourages student collaboration and increases engagement.

These technologies are emerging and growing exponentially, especially in the education sector as it will soon become the new norm. It’s important for educators to be on board while this new technology is still being developed because immersive learning will have an enormous impact on the next generation and how they will learn. Immersive learning tools motivate and interact with students which leads to a positive learning experience. Education will benefit the most from these technologies along with Advertising, Military, Tourism, and Entertainment.
